First Light Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of First Light ("the App"), developed by SoftCrunch Labs ("we", "our", or "us"). These Terms apply to First Light on both iOS and Android. By downloading, installing, or using First Light on any platform, you agree to these Terms.

1. Eligibility

First Light is rated 4+ on the App Store and rated for ages 13+ on Google Play. By using the App, you confirm that you have the legal capacity to agree to these Terms, or that a parent or guardian has agreed on your behalf.

2. License

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use First Light on devices that you own or control. Your use is also subject to the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions on iOS, or the Google Play Terms of Service on Android. All rights not expressly granted to you are reserved by SoftCrunch Labs.

3. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Reverse-engineer, decompile, or disassemble the App
• Redistribute, sublicense, or sell the App or any part of it
• Use the App for any unlawful purpose
• Attempt to bypass security measures, rate limits, or subscription verification
• Remove or alter any copyright, trademark, or proprietary notices
• Attempt to circumvent the app-blocking enforcement to avoid completing a devotional session

4. App Blocking Authorization

First Light blocks apps you choose during the schedules you configure. The technical mechanism differs by platform: on iOS, we use Apple's Family Controls, Managed Settings, and Device Activity frameworks (you authorize this through the Screen Time prompt). On Android, we use an Accessibility Service that you grant in system Settings; the service detects when a blocked app comes to the foreground and replaces it with a reading-session prompt. By enabling app blocking on either platform, you acknowledge that:

• You are solely responsible for choosing which apps to block and when
• On iOS the blocking is enforced by iOS at the system level via Apple's frameworks; on Android the blocking is enforced by First Light's Accessibility Service overlay. We do not control the underlying operating-system behavior beyond what these surfaces allow
• You may experience unintended consequences if you block apps that are critical to your daily activities (for example, communication or accessibility apps)
• You can disable blocking, modify schedules, or revoke the underlying authorization at any time — from within First Light, from iOS Settings → Screen Time, or from Android Settings → Accessibility
• First Light is not responsible for any loss, inconvenience, or missed communication arising from your choice to block specific apps

5. Bible Content

First Light includes Bible translations licensed for distribution within the App. You acknowledge that:

• Translations of Scripture are interpretive works that vary across editions and traditions
• The Bible content provided in First Light is for personal devotional, educational, and worship use
• You may not redistribute, modify, or commercially exploit Bible text obtained through the App
• We do not warrant the accuracy or completeness of any specific translation

6. Subscriptions and Pricing

First Light Premium:

First Light offers a Premium subscription that unlocks additional features. Subscription pricing and free trial details are displayed in the App at the time of purchase, via Apple's StoreKit on iOS or Google Play Billing on Android. We reserve the right to change pricing or subscription terms at any time; any changes will take effect at the start of your next billing period after notice.

Auto-Renewal:

Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each billing period unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple ID account (iOS) or Google Play account (Android) will be charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.

Cancellation:

You can cancel your subscription at any time — on iOS through your Apple ID account settings (Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions), or on Android through Google Play (Play Store → profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions). Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. No partial refunds are issued for unused portions of a subscription period.

Free Trial:

If a free trial is offered, it provides full Premium access for the duration shown in the App. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, your subscription will automatically begin and your Apple ID account (iOS) or Google Play account (Android) will be charged.

7. Intellectual Property

The App, including its design, code, graphics, branding, companion artwork, and original written content, is owned by SoftCrunch Labs and protected by copyright and intellectual property laws. Bible translations included in the App remain the intellectual property of their respective rights holders or are in the public domain, as applicable. Reflection notes and prayer entries you create are yours.

8. Privacy

Your use of First Light is also governed by our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect, use, and protect your information.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

First Light is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

We do not warrant that:

• The App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure
• App-blocking will work flawlessly in every iOS or Android version or scenario
• Reading reminders or notifications will be delivered at the precise time you intend
• Defects will be corrected in a timely manner
• The App will be compatible with all devices or operating system versions

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, SoftCrunch Labs shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, goodwill, missed communications, or any consequences arising from apps blocked by First Light, in connection with your use of the App.

Our total liability for any claims arising from your use of the App shall not exceed the amounts you have paid to us in the six (6) months preceding the claim. For users on the free tier, our maximum liability is zero.

11. Third-Party Services

First Light integrates with third-party services including Google (Firebase Analytics, Firebase Crashlytics, and on Android: Google Play Billing and Firebase Cloud Messaging), AppsFlyer, and on iOS, Apple (CloudKit, StoreKit, Family Controls, Apple Push Notification service). Your use of these services is subject to their respective terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for the practices or content of third-party services.

12. Termination

We may terminate or suspend your access to the App at any time, without prior notice, for conduct that we believe violates these Terms or is harmful to other users or third parties.

You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it from your device and cancelling any active subscription.

13. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.

14. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Alberta, Canada, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising from these Terms shall be resolved exclusively in the courts of Alberta, Canada.

Electronic Consent and Agreement

By downloading, installing, accessing, or using First Light, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. Your electronic consent constitutes a legally binding agreement.
